I am 81 years old. My early childhood was spent in the sourh of England At the age of about 5 I can remember Guy fawks night . For weeks before people wouldd dump their burnable rubbish in a huge pile in the local park building it up to a mountainous pile in readiness for Guy Fawkes night. Someone added a huge guy fawkes ephigy on top. Members of the community gathered there with their fireworks at dusk. I can remember being awed by the sight of the huge fire but terrified of the fireworks!. In later childhood guyfawks celebrations continued in my new home country Australia , Now fireworks are banned and Halloween has very much taken over. I guess the was little profit to be made from selling fireworks where they were banned to the general public. People spend hundreds of dollars on halloween costumes, Costumes are increasingly more gruesome and gory. Personally I dislike the commercialised halloween celebration especially for small children. There is enough gore in the world and on TV.

I have not posted this before as your website is saying!

when immigrants from the british isle came to america, i guess the mixture of cultural practices became a melting pot. the tradition of hollowed and guy fawkes night were mixed by the irish and english immigrant. why? because they bore similarities and they were fun. particularly after the cvil war where there were so many deaths and poverties. so the practices of both celebration were utilise to exploit the society(i mean in a fun way).

soul cake + a penny for the guy = the right time for kids and the poor to get some goodies
making mischief + wearing a mask = no one would know u
gives some contribution or endure some mischief = treat or trick (modern version)
